Do you own a small business or struggle with posting quality content on a regular basis?
Have you heard or know about content repurposing but just don’t think your content is worthy of being on another platform?
Do you have imposter syndrome when it comes to repurposing including over thinking people will care if you repurpose your content and be exposed for lazily reposting something?
These are normal questions or concerns that frequently come up when I mention repurposing to a client or in a piece of content.
What I believe always gets lost in translation is that repurposing often gets confused with recycling. They’re not the same thing.
Recycling would be literally taking the same post and caption word for word and slapping it somewhere. This could also be more aligned with cross-posting or cross-promoting. An example is your TikTok being reposted on IG Reels (which is totally fine and I highly recommend doing it!)
Repurposing takes the foundation of a piece of content, and either expands upon it, updates it, or reformats it.
It may sound daunting to do all this but it is not required, and all these factors are not always utilized. For example, this very blog post is an expanded caption from a very old Instagram post of mine, but since this is a blog, I am adding more information to make it relevant to the topic. I don’t need to update it or reformat it.
Repurposing should not be HARD, just like content creation. It should help you save time and resources to show up on one or more platforms consistently when you can’t allot time to create content from scratch.
There are many different repurposing formats out there, but I think the best way to repurpose content is to focus on long term content (i.e. a blog, a long video, or a livestream) that can be cut down into short term content (i.e. a carousel, a static post, or a short video) OR into another medium (i.e. a blog article used as a script for a video).
ONE WAY I love to talk about repurposing, is turning one IG live video into 7 PIECES OF CONTENT:
➡️ Create 1 IG Live
➡️ Save the live as an IG video on your feed
➡️ Promote the video as one of your stories
➡️ Save it and post it on Facebook
➡️ Save it and post it on Youtube
➡️ Clip highlights from the video into a TikTok or IG Reel
➡️ Convert the video into an audio file for a podcast episode
This is one simple way of turning a rich piece of long form content into quality short form pieces of content by barely lifting a finger. The hard work is really just creating cute little covers or short captions which is not a lot in retrospect compared to sitting down to script, film, and edit a long video for multiple platforms.
That wasn't so hard was it? What’s a piece of long form content in your social media strategy that you can repurpose to other platforms?
