I've never been much of a reader but there are a couple books that have made a seismic change in my business and in my life. When I was in elementary school I had the chance to read all the time. I would go on office duty, take books from the library, and read them during my shift because nobody came in for anything more than an excuse to get an ice bag for attention.
I learned incredible things just from the stories I dived into. Even fictional stories are so important because they have lessons between the lines. Eventually I did make my way over into non-fiction and started naturally delving into self help and entrepreneurial books.
I’ll never forget when a toxic person from my past basically insinuated that self help books or how-to novels aren’t real reading…. The delusion. As far as I was concerned, anything written on a page and sold at Indigo qualified as a book. But I understand the reluctance towards the genre. Often they’re full of fluff, but I kept digging for the right one.
1. You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth - Jen Sincero
I have a lot of financial trauma. I had to learn that money is energy and in the sense that it flows in and out. You're never going to have a set amount in your chequing account if you aspire to be a business owner. You're going to be investing in diversifying your income, putting money in joint accounts to partner with others, trading stocks or crypto, and obviously spending money (because we all gotta eat).
If you want to make money you have to spend money. So if you want to make millions you've gotta spend thousands. Money will always be a transfer of energy and money makes the world go round in exchange for value. It is not the end-all be-all to your life and it is just a transitional tool used for you to receive something that's going to better your life.
2. The Secret - Rhonda Byrnes
The Secret is something that I actually learned from the 2007 movie itself rather than the book. But the movie actually uses most of the monologues in the book so it’s not much of a difference.I had no idea it was already a worldwide phenomena and was endorsed by Oprah. I literally thought it was a secret no one knew.
The energy of the universe is something a little bit more complicated but what I can tell you is that anytime I really set my mind to something and I believe that it’s going to happen even though it’s a little bit delusional, I always get what I want and I'll make it happen. As long as you are putting it out there, plus taking action, you will get closer to your desires.
3. InstaStyle: Curate Your Life, Create Stunning Photos, and Elevate Your Instagram Influence - Tessa Barton
InstaStyle taught me the secret behind all of my favourite aesthetic influencers. I learned basic photography principles such as the rule of grid, and what different niches are doing. The book is a little dated because it came out in 2017 so the Instagram influencer marketing realm has changed drastically but Tezza’s insight can still be applied to video content.
4. Surrounded by Idiots: The Four Types of Human Behavior and How to Effectively Communicate with Each in Business (and in Life) - Thomas Erikson
This was one of the best books I ever read. First of all the title is so relatable. I have always had a hard time communicating to people. This book teaches you the 4 types of personalities, how to interact with them and how to get what you want. Not in the manipulative sense! You are never going to change somebody, but you can choose how to interact with them.
5. 101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think - Brianna Wiest
What book am I passionate about even more? This book is like watching a hundred YouTube videos just in the reading form. Often so many self-help books are based around one concept or one model and they're going through the whole book doing like one chapter per step and it's a lot of fluff. Whereas in this book each essay is digestible so you can easily read at your own pace without thinking ‘when is this book going to end?’
6. Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen - Donald Miller
This one is important because I think that branding is often overlooked as such an important aspect of business because if you don't have a brand, you don't have a story, then you don't have a target audience to attract, and you just don't have a purpose other than making money from your products and services. The author teaches branding using the analogy of a story and how you are not the hero, you are simply the guide. Your client is the hero. It uses a lot of examples from movies and books and so that's why I found it really interesting. I just think it's a great way to learn about branding from a beginner's perspective.
