Why Is a Niche Important?
Every social media ‘guru’, coach, manager, or consultant will tell you that having a niche is important to find the right audience to purchase your products or services. They’ll also tell you that it will make your content creation process easier, make running your page or business less stressful, and will ultimately attract the right tribe. And for the most part, they are right. A niche is an umbrella model that can essentially touch every part of your business.
What People Miss:
And yet most people still misinterpret what a niche is or understand this model. It cannot make or break your success, but as you scale without a solid foundation, you’ll only face a constant uphill battle which is not the most enjoyable (take it from me).
My Story:
I started out as a lifestyle influencer, having no idea who I was and what I wanted to do. Then I initially jumped into the common social media guru stereotype of providing burnt out individuals attract ideal clients through seo approved content. While this was better than just being the average social media manager, again my audience was not clarified, and I was just advertising that I was guaranteed to get people's numbers. This ruined my chances of attracting the right client, as well as the right repeated client. I was attracting one off people from various business models helping them with their Instagram growth with them expecting to go viral overnight while I had to relearn their story, product or service, and purpose.
On the positive side it was great for the time being because I was making money, but it was not consistent, and I had to really do a lot of outbound marketing to get the occasional client inquiry while in school.
So I finally realized that I don’t enjoy chasing trends or numbers, hated all the clients I worked with, and had MAJOR imposter syndrome. I also realized that my community was basically dead and I now have to restart building it which felt just impossible. But I knew that I wouldn’t rather be doing anything else, and took some time to reinvent myself.
I rebranded over the summer, continued to do inner reflection, went back and did my first ever group coaching program to really hone in on WHAT DO I WANT TO DO and WHO DO I WANT TO SERVE, and today I am helping *NEW* Zillenial entrepreneurs elevate their business idea to create a sustainable marketing plan including valuable & viral IG/TikTok content to attract dream clients.
From this period of pivoting once again, mixed with my school workload I stopped posting unless necessary or valuable, and really have prepared to simplify my marketing channels. As I move back into things at full pace, I would be lying if I didn’t say that business is slow, but at least instead of wasting time working with people I hate or posting like crazy I am doing fundamental business activities such as starting this blog, registering my business on google, or investing in digital products.
I also know that my time is being valued and I’m finally on the right path to the success that I desire. Additionally, I know that this slow bubbling is integral work that will pay off in the long run versus my crash and burn of the past.
Avoid These Misconceptions: Pick the Right Niche
Therefore, if you’re questioning your current “niche” or whole business identity, I have a couple recommendations that can help point you in the right direction of steering towards a new niche!
Being Too Vague
You can’t help everyone. So be the leader in your niche. As per my story, instead of just focusing on SEO optimized content which is a common goal amongst all social media managers, I am focusing on helping people make sustainable content that does well so they can have an effective marketing plan.
Categorizing Yourself
I am a multi-faceted individual just like you! Niching down doesn’t close doors on what you post. I’m a pop culture OBSESSED social media consultant that is tired of being in the rat race of numbers and I would only want to work with people that resonate with that. You’re allowed to showcase your lifestyle outside of educational content and relate trending topics to your niche. Your niche is not your brand. You are your brand. Think of a niche as your elevator pitch to what you’re about. This is easier to resonate with a customer than just focusing on the end goal. Remember people will more likely buy from a face than a brand in 2022.
Overthinking
The beauty of having your own business or social media is changing at any given moment. It is OK to pivot like me. You are taking the right step before you go in too deep. Stop settling to please others or keep telling yourself that things will be fine once you work harder on a task or listen to your peers.
